embroiderama cuz she is a rock star ;). Set in the Sight series, after “and there is something just beginning”. Written for the “Fireworks” challenge at

Summary: The crickets have come out again, a chorus of soft chirps spreading along the tall grass outside the square of mowed lawn. There’s smoke in the air -- a bonfire that Dean keeps banking with fresh wood, the crackle of fresh sap hissing into steam as the kids cheer him on.
The grass is damp beneath Sam’s fingers, dragging slowly along the ground as he lies in the lounge chair in the backyard. Summer lightning storms sent a burst of water down on the field behind their house earlier that day, and a shimmer of wet still lingers on the surface of everything outside.

Jacob is laughing, that innocent sweet joy bubbling from his belly, contagious happiness filtering through the wind. Sam’s heart swells, pride and peace a warm buzz under his skin. Five years now, five years since the day Jacob was born and Sam has never seen his face, but he knows his boy.
A warm weight presses against Sam’s thigh, the chair dipping under the added pressure. Jo’s soft hair brushes against his cheeks just before tentative lips. Sam threads his fingers through strands of hair that are forever golden in his memory and holds the moment sweet in his bones.
He smells the sulfur first, blood deep instinct setting him on edge before he hears the sound of something rising. His heart is racing, ears tuned into every sound around them. The sky explodes and Sam wraps his arms around Jo, ears searching out Jacob in the crowd.
Then Jo’s calming him down, smooth hands over his and the warm rush of breath over his ear. “S’just the fireworks, Sam. Everything’s okay.” And then he can breathe, and the sky lights up in his mind.
